How can scars be treated?

There are several things you can do to help lessen the appearance of a scar. Don’t expose wounds to sunlight for at least a year, as sunlight causes the scars to turn a red or purple color. Keep the wound clean and do not pick at the wound or scab. Once the scabs have healed, and the wound is closed, you can use a scar treatment cream. Use gentle massage to apply the cream, as this will help to flatten out the scar. If you have a scar that has not healed properly or that you are unhappy with, talk to your doctor. You may be a candidate for scar revision.

The treatment of scars is multifactorial. Steroid injections (kenalog) may be useful to soften and smooth out a hypertrophic scar. Multiple injections may be required. Silicone gel sheeting and ointments (Kelocote) may be used twice daily for new and pre-existing scars, surgical excision of hypertrophic scars may be useful (not for keloids). Pressure dressings and vitamin E may be useful as well. 

Calendula is a natural remedy that can be used to minimize scarring while a cut or surgical incision is healing. You can get Calendula in a 30c potency (strength) in health food stores or online and dissolve a couple of pellets in your mouth as a dose, before surgery and then twice a day after surgery or a cut.

Once a scar is formed, though, it’s too late for Calendula. The best thing at that point is Castro’s Scar Cream, available online at www.mirandacastro.com. (It’s not available in stores.) The homeopath who designed the formula tells me that her local plastic surgeon orders it by the case because it is so effective at preventing or reversing scars like the ones formed by plastic surgery.
