    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Getting the flu vaccine and taking certain preventive actions can help you stay healthy. The flu (influenza) vaccine protects against the strains of flu that are most likely to make you sick. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone six months of age and older should get the flu vaccine as soon as it is available. In addition to getting the flu vaccine, washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with people who are sick can help protect your health during the flu season.

If you are exposed to a person who has the flu, you may consider asking your doctor about taking an antiviral medication, which can lower your risk for developing flu symptoms.
