How can I exercise with a broken ankle?
-
National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:If you have sustained a broken ankle you must first consult your physician to see which exercises you can or cannot perform. Broken bones at the ankle joint have various severity and each type of break has a different set of precautions and contraindications. Until your physician clears you for activity, limit exercise to upper body resistance training in a seated or lying position. Example exercises are seated bench press, seated overhead press, lat pull downs, seated rows, seated biceps curls and seated tricep extensions.

You can use an arm ergometer. You can perform upper body exercises using hand held weights. You can perform leg extensions, lateral leg raises. You can perform internal and external rotation movements of the casted leg.
On the uninjured leg you can perform exercises that challenge your balance abilities like the single leg squat.
As the other parts of our body are functional, you can also perform large rhythmic movements seated to your favorite tunes.
