How can I fit in exercise at work?

Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:Working a desk job can really do a number on your health. A growing body of research is finding that regardless of how much you exercise or how fit you are, the more hours you sit, the higher your risk of dying at an earlier age. Now that’s a scary thought.
With that in mind, the most important thing you can do during the day is get up and move around. Get up and walk to your co-workers' desks to talk to them instead of sending an email, go for a 10-15 minute walk around the block during your work day, and walk to the kitchen for a glass of water every hour or so. It may seem insignificant, but these little steps add up and get you one step closer to your 10,000 steps per day goal. To make it more fun, invest in a pedometer (they only cost bout $20) and make it a game to see how many steps you can add to your day.Working a desk job can really do a number on your health. National Academy of Sports Medicine answered:There are many tricks to fitting in exercise at work. If you have a sedentary job, be sure to get up from your desk at least once every hour. Spend 5 minutes stretching, moving and increasing circulation. Additional strategies include pacing every time you're on the phone, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and parking in the furthest parking space and walk to your office building. Lastly, if possible squeeze in a quick workout or walk during your lunch hour.

Towanda Stewart of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:With greater focus on health and healthy lifestyles, we need to share ways to fit exercise in at work. Not only does exercise help decrease and/ or maintain weight but it decreases risk factors associated with several diseases including hypertension, diabetes & heart disease. One way to "fit in exercise at work" is seated exercises. There are many simple exercises such as stretching and arm exercises (with/ without dumbbells) and legs exercises (with/without ankle weights) that you can do while seated. Be creative! Do squats holding on to your desk chair! You can also volunteer to complete tasks that involve walking, bending or lifting that may not be part of your job description (such as stocking, pharmacy run, product assembly & etc.). It's a win-win as you get moving for better health and impress your boss at the same time!
