Bed sores occur when pressure cuts off circulation to certain areas of skin and tissue. Because blood carries oxygen and other essential nutrients, the skin and tissue can start to die. In the most severe stage of bed sores, even bones, muscles, tendons, and joints can be damaged.

Bed sores are also susceptible to infection. The infection can slow down the healing process, and in more severe cases, it can enter the bone or the bloodstream.
