How does Beano work to relieve gas?
-
Dr. Bill Salt answered:Beano is manufactured by AKPharma, Inc., the manufacturers of Lactaid and Prelief. Beano contains an enzyme called alpha-galactosidase that digests the indigestible carbohydrate (raffinose) contained in beans and some vegetables. Beano has no effect on gas associated with other carbohydrates, such as sorbitol, lactose, wheat and fiber. It cannot be added to food while it is being cooked, since heat degrades the enzyme. It is used for flatulence.

Beano is an enzyme-based dietary supplement that reduces gas in the digestive tract. It can improve digestion by reducing bloating, and discomfort caused by gas formation during digestion. Beano contains the enzyme alpha-galactosidase that breaks down oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides can only be partially digested, and are a major contribute to the formation of gas in the digestive tract. Foods, specifically vegetables are high in oligosaccharides.
