The Society of Thoracic Surgeons answered:
Silicon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, and when combined with oxygen it forms a variety of minerals termed silica – the most common being crystalline silica (CS), or common quartz. Excessive exposure to CS dust, seen in miners and other occupations, leads to a common lung disease called silicosis. Patients with silicosis have an increased risk, perhaps two-fold, of developing lung cancer compared with the normal population.
