I want to emphasize that "steady progress" is a very positive thing when it comes to autism! Unfortunately, many alternative therapies that people recommend or try for autistic patients have not been validated in any quality scientific studies. Many of the studies on some of these alternative therapies have shown that there is no benefit compared with traditional therapies, and in some cases there has been a harm to the child. While I completely understand the need and desire to do everything you can to help your child, I caution you to do a lot of research and talk to your child's pediatrician before trying anything. If you feel that the therapies are not helping, there is nothing wrong with seeking help from another therapist, psychologist, etc., and possibly finding someone who is a better fit for your child's individual needs.

I was very interested when someone locally told me about how the Specific Carb Diet had practically eliminated the symptoms of autism that her son had been displaying. I did some research and found others who were raving about this diet (more can be found at http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/05/specific-carb-diet-helps-autistic-children/). I have also heard positives in treatment of ADHD. 'Treating a spectrum of symptoms with a strict diet is difficult and requires years of case studies; however, more and more medical professionals are considering the Specific Carb Diet as a treatment for Autism spectrum disorders,' and it is certainly something that I would consider for cases of ADHD, autism, adoption, or a number of behavioral issues, that might end up being more physical than behavioral.

The theory behind using the Specific Carb Diet to treat autism is based in dietary toxicity. "Sugars come in three forms – monosaccharides or “simple sugars,” disaccharides, and polysaccharides; however, our bodies can only absorb monosaccharides. When other sugars are ingested, your body must first break them down into monosaccharides. If this does not occur or occurs slowly, the micorbial flora residing in your belly, which aid with digestion and maintaining a proper ph balance, will feed on these more complex sugars and create an overgrowth of fermenting bacteria in your digestive system, damaging your intestinal walls and immunity. Toxicity and a lowered immune system can create symptoms congruent with an Autism spectrum disorder."
