Adding flavor to a dish without merely tossing in a stick of butter is a challenge, but it can also be fun. Non-fatty additions like vinegar or lemon juice can give a dish a low calorie kick. They can be added to the cooking liquids for grains and to tomato sauces for pasta, and be sprinkled on sautéed vegetables or fresh berries and fruits. Spices and herbs are another great way to maximize a dish's flavor. (Perhaps you could start an herb garden. That would be a RealAge (physiologic age) double dip, since hobbies such as gardening keep you younger.) Infusing ingredients such as oils and vinegars with flavors like basil or hot pepper is another way to bring on taste without added fat. Another is to use the flavor intensive pastes such as anchovy paste or wasabi that pack a powerful flavor punch. They can add an instant boost to sauces, dressings, and marinades. They can also add zip to a pizza base or cracker spread.

Fresh herbs provide flavor to food without sodium and fat. Mix delicious fat free sauces and marinades and add to dishes that include herbs, citrus fruits, vinegar, mustard, and pepper with a dash of course salt, and a dab of raw sugar, honey or agave nectar. Be creative and try different food combinations. An added fruit or vegetable can produce a medley of gourmet taste.
