Debra Fulghum Bruce PhD answered:There are many herbs that reduce inflammation in the body if used regularly. For instance, ginger is a strong anti-inflammatory and has been shown in scientific studies to ease arthritis pain. Chile peppers contain capsaicin, which is used in a variety of over-the-counter rubs and salves to help relieve muscle aches and pain.
Studies show that capsaicin works by reducing substance P, a neuropeptide that is found at nerve endings and is involved in transmitting the pain signal to the brain. Some people also find benefit in taking cayenne and ginger capsules found at any supermarket or natural foods store.
By sprinkling turmeric, which contains curcumin, into your favorite dishes, you could help to stop pain in its tracks. Experts credit curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects for its ability to stop pain. Curcumin is added to many Indian dishes, as turmeric is the main ingredient in curry powder.
You can use turmeric with rice, lentils, and other vegetables, or sprinkle it on your salad for a burst of color. Mustard also contains curcumin, and may be used in cooking and dining in such forms as mustard greens, the prepared mustard condiment, mustard powder, and mustard seeds.

Chris Kilham answered:Some of the very best herbs for pain and inflammation are Turmeric and its derivative curcumin, Ginger, Cat's Claw, Andrographis paniculata, and cannabis. Cannabis is illegal in many places, so bear that in mind. Curcumin from turmeric is especially well studied for pain and inflammation, as is the Amazonian herb Cat's Claw.
