If your child is actively psychotic and is having hallucinations, call your doctor or call 911 immediately. You will definitely need to call 911 if your child appears to be at risk of self-harm or harming others. Do not restrain an agitated child, but dim the lights and encourage your child to relax and calm down.
The Mayo Clinic states that prompt treatment of schizophrenia can often prevent the disorder from getting worse. Children sometimes need to be treated in hospitals when they are having active psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia. In a hospital setting, doctors, nurses, and psychiatrists can work together to stabilize your child, providing around-the-clock medical and mental health care. In the hospital, your child will be observed, with needs met for good nutrition and sleep.
