Offer your guests a variety of hot beverages such as hot herbal teas, flavored coffees, and lower-calorie condiments such as fat free half and half, fat free whipped cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa powder, and non-nutritive sweeteners. Serve a variety of fresh fruit such as grapes, oranges, apples and pears in a variety of colors. Drizzle with lemon juice so they don’t turn brown.

Often times you can find modified recipes for your favorite sweet treats around the holidays. Browsing your favorite recipe website or food & cooking magazine, or even conducting a simple search for "healthy holiday desserts" on your preferred online search engine will bring up several ideas!

Other healthier sweet treats you can try include:

    • Dark chocolate-covered fresh fruit or fondue
    • Cinnamon dusted or cocoa roasted nuts
    • Baked apples stuffed with raisins, cinnamon, slivered almonds
    • Baked Fruit cobblers or streusels made with a topping of old fashioned oats, minimal brown sugar, and a plant-sterol containing spread instead of butter or margarine
    • Dark chocolate bark with dried fruit and nuts
    • Hot chocolate made with skim milk

Nothing says the holidays like a candy cane. A small candy cane is relatively low in calories compared to a chewy-gooey chocolate, which can be consumed in one bite. On the other hand, a candy cane will last a long time. The fresh peppermint flavor is a guilt-free way to enjoy sweets without adding weight.
