    Dr. Dean Ornish answered:

Insoluble fibers increase stool bulk and substantially decrease the amount of time it takes for food to pass through your intestines. The increase in stool bulk will cure constipation for many people and will decrease the likelihood of hemorrhoids, appendicitis' diverticular disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. Because food passes through your body more quickly, your colon is exposed to carcinogens for a shorter period of time; this may be one reason why the risk of colon cancer is lower on a high-fiber diet. Wheat bran is a major source of insoluble fiber.
