Frequent hand washing helps to protect you and others from the germs that cause colds and the flu (influenza). These germs can be passed from one person to another through hugs, hand shaking and other personal contact. They also live on objects you touch every day, such as door knobs, telephones and keyboards. Once a cold or flu germ is on your skin, you can become infected. Washing your hands with warm water and soap can help prevent you from infecting yourself with cold and flu germs or spreading them to others.
