When a person hallucinates, they see, hear, taste, smell or feel things that are not real. This is considered a psychotic symptom of schizophrenia. The most common hallucination that occurs for people with schizophrenia is hearing voices that do not actually exist. Or, people may hear voices that make hurtful or negative statements. Some people with schizophrenia are so convinced that their hallucinations are real, that they may live with the hallucinations for months or years before they (or someone else), realize that anything is out of the ordinary.
