A quality gym doesn't need to have brand new equipment in order to help you reach your goals. However, if the place looks dirty, grungy or that Rocky Balboa trains there on a regular basis, chances are the facility is not putting their funds into newer equipment. As you look around, pay attention to whether or not the equipment has been wiped down recently, or if there are “out of service” signs all over the place. Usually, just a quick walk around will tell you what you need to know, but if you still need help, bring someone along that you trust and is knowledgeable with fitness equipment.

For the most part, gym equipment has utilized the same body motions for decades.  In recent years there have been new advances in machines but the exercise motion are generally the same.  A big factor to consider is how well the health club maintains their equipment.

Does it appear to be consistently 'wiped down' after previous users?

Do the machine joints move freely?

    Does the machine feel stable?

These are important questions to consider when determining the overall quality of the facility.

Look at the machines. Check their labels and write down the serial numbers. Then call the manufacturer and find out when they were built.

Simply take a look around. Often if equipment is old and outdated, you’ll be able to tell by the upholstery, or nuts and bolts. There may be rust or grime on the moving parts, especially if they haven’t been well maintained.

When touring the facility, do you see any equipment with “Out of Service” signs? Ask how often the equipment is cleaned for health and safety purposes.
