- If you're using a propane gas grill, inspect your propane tank and hoses for leaks, dents, cracks or corrosion.
- Always light the match before turning on the propane gas.
- Never use your grill indoors or under any structures that may catch fire, such as patio covers.
- Never smoke cigarettes or use matches or lighters near the grill.
- If you're using a charcoal grill, use water to make sure that coals are extinguished and be careful never to dispose of briquettes that are still hot.
- Avoid loose clothing while grilling, especially long sleeves.
- Parental supervision is essential—keep all children away from the grill.

Joan Salge Blake of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics answered:Keep moist disposable towelettes near the grill as a reminder to the grillmaster to clean his/her hands before touching the food. Wash the platter and utensils that touched the raw meat before using them again on the cooked meat. Use a separate marinade if you plan on coating the meat again during grilling.
Don’t rely on 20:20 vision. The only way to tell if the meat is done is to use a thermometer. Also, don’t let leftovers loaf around. The rule of thumb is that food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours or 1 hour if it is 90 degrees F or above outside. Wrap up leftovers immediately and give them the big chill in the refrigerator or freezer for another meal.
