    Here are some stress-reducing solutions:

    • Step 1: Don’t Drink Your Calories. Removing 1 bottle of sugary soda or juice a day can save you 50,000 calories a year.
    • Step 2: Develop a Daily Practice. For example, set a bedtime. Sleep deprivation increases the stress hormone cortisol.
    • Step 3: Get Moving. You don’t need a gym membership to stay active. Doing the dishes counts as activity.
    • Step 4: Find a Stress Buddy. When you feel like stress eating, find someone you can call instead.

Breathing can measure and alter your psychological state, making a stressful moment accelerate or diminish in intensity. Think about how your respiration quickens when you are fearful or in great pain and how taking a deep, slow breath can be calming and reduce stress.

Use my technique "Total Life Change (TLC) Breathing" anytime you feel tense, anxious, or stressed. As you learn to do the TLC breathing, you will gain control over a basic physiological function; this will help decrease the release of stress hormones and slow down your heart rate during anxious moments. Also, by adding oxygen to the blood, you cause the body to release endorphins—the hormones that give you a greater sense of well-being and contentment.

    1. Sit upright in a comfortable chair with your feet on the floor. Or sit on the floor with your legs crisscrossed and your feet as close to your groin as possible. Rest your hands on your knees with the palms facing upward.
    2. With your eyes closed, inhale slowly though your nose by using your diaphragm. Let the air expand your belly, and keep your chest quiet. (You can place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen to make sure the abdomen is rising but not the chest. The chest should remain still to do this correctly.)
    3. Once your lungs are full, hold your breath (comfortably) to fully oxygenate the blood.
    4. Exhale for twice as long as your inhalation count. The exhalation phase is the most beneficial to the mind and body because this is when natural opiate hormones called “endorphins” (the “feel good” hormones) are released. The exhalation provides the most relaxation, exhaling for twice as long also eliminates toxins by way of your lymphatic system.
