How can exfoliating my skin keep it healthy?

Ben Kaminsky answered:Exfoliation, or the act of removing the surface layer of dead cells, is vital for a brighter complexion and diminished appearance of fine lines. This skin renewal is done either once or twice a week, depending on the skin type and level of sensitivity.
It is important to select the specific ingredients depending on your skin type whether dry, oily, combination, acneic or sensitive. If the exfoliating ingredient is in a creamy base, it is usually more gentle and nourishing, and appropriate for normal to dry skin. If the ingredient is in an oil-free solution with foaming action, it is usually best for non-sensitive, oilier skin.
After exfoliating the skin, it is not uncommon to feel some transient tingling, especially after using alpha or beta hydroxyl acids. It is important to rinse your skin with water to hydrate it, and then super-saturate the skin with a moisturizer to quench the new skin cells.
Your skin type will dictate the frequency of your exfoliation. You can exfoliate once a week if you have dry or sensitive skin, or twice a week if your skin is normal, dark, oily, or acne-prone. During winter months, cut back on exfoliating if your skin becomes ultra-dry and flakey.
