What exercises should I follow after gastric bypass surgery?

An exercise regimen is an important component of weight loss after bariatric surgery in order to maintain an active metabolism and develop habits that will help attain the best post-operative results. After the initial recovery period, a daily exercise regimen should be initiated that incorporates both aerobic and weight training. This will allow for both the cardiovascular benefits of aerobic exercise as well as increased muscle mass to raise your metabolic rate. Often, it is most helpful to work with a trainer to develop a program that is most suited to your needs. Tonya Bolden answered:By late fall 2003, I was in full compliance with the post-surgery plan, including exercise. “Exercise during rapid weight loss is critical to redirect your body to use up fat stores rather than valuable proteins,” explained the booklet Dr. Lourie had given me. “You will need to plan for a minimum of twenty minutes of aerobic exercise a day to ensure healthy weight loss.” I started exercising about two weeks after my surgery, when my doctor said it was safe to do so. I chose morning swims. Early on, it was really more like a morning walk in the water: walking up, back, and across in the pool for twenty minutes. I added water weights as I got stronger. After about a month or so of this, I was able to add laps. In time, I was swimming every morning for about an hour, with rest stops.
