If you have known heart disease and you've not been exercising, it is important to get your doctor's approval before starting an exercise program. He may ask you to undergo a stress test if you haven't had one in a while: that will help him know whether the blockages in your heart are stable or whether there's the possibility of heart damage with exercise that's too strenuous. The main thing is not to overexert yourself and get chest pain or shortness of breath.

Exercise safety recommendations for people with heart disease include:

    1. Do not eat heavy meals for one hour before exercising. Water is OK anytime and is encouraged during exercise.

    2. Know your training heart rate. Don't be afraid to ask for help when trying to find your pulse.

    3. Do not hold your breath during any activities, including sit-ups, long slow stretches, or other exercises. This causes stress on your cardiovascular system.

    4. Avoid very hot and cold showers after exercise.

    5. Avoid chewing gum during exercise.
