Lipid storage disorders are the results of faulty genes. These genes normally help the body produce enzymes that regulate lipid production and storage. The enzymes allow your body to convert lipids into different forms when necessary. When you have the genes for a lipid storage disorders, the enzymes are not present or do not function properly. This leads to a build up of lipids in the cells and tissues of the body, which causes the damage seen with lipid storage disorders.
