    Discovery Health answered:

Wheat, barley and rye aren't allowed on a gluten-free diet, but dieticians disagree about whether oats are acceptable. In the past, people who suffer from celiac disease might have been warned off oats entirely, but new research indicates small amounts might be all right. There is a concern that oats might have been in close contact with wheat, and therefore contaminated, before they arrived at a store. Ask your doctor about adding oats to your diet and check for warnings about cross-contamination.

The use of moderate amounts of gluten-free oats has been considered acceptable for some time now. However, there are a small percentage of those with Celiac who will not tolerate oats. My advice to clients is to ensure you are very stable and solid on your gluten-free diet before reintroducing them to your diet. And of course it is imperative to make sure you are purchasing gluten-free oats (due to the risk of contamination).

For people with celiac disease, it is best to avoid regular oats as they are highly contaminated with gluten-containing grains in the food supply. Most people with celiac disease can tolerate certified gluten free oats, but there are some who react to even certified gluten free options. If you want to test out certified gluten free oats, it is highly recommended to do so under the care of your physician and a dietitian. They can help you identify whether or not you are tolerating certified gluten free oats. This is particularly important for celiacs who are asymptomatic, meaning they don't experience outward symptoms when exposed to gluten. Blood testing can identify exposure to gluten when outward symptoms aren't present.
