The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ensures that pre-existing conditions are covered when you change from one group plan to another. It helps people change jobs while they were being treated for a chronic condition. HIPAA prevents your new health plan from denying coverage based on your health status when you change jobs and move from one group plan to another.  Any pre-existing conditions must be covered by the new health plan. Since HIPAA is a federal law, it applies to group health plans in all fifty states but varies in interpretation. Contact your state's health plan regulatory agency for information on the interpretations and applications in your state.
