    Dr. Douglas Severance answered:
In a healthy person, coffee should not cause premature heartbeats. A real premature heartbeat is an additional beat between two normal heartbeats. If you have a premature heartbeat, it does not always mean that you have a serious medical problem. Yet some premature heartbeats can cause chronic arrhythmias, particularly if you have a heart condition or heart disease. Usually premature heartbeats are triggered by stimulants. Stimulants can include caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, energy drinks, colas), OTC cold medicines (decongestants that contain pseudoephedrine), and some asthma medications and asthma inhalers.
