However, women with pre-existing periodontitis should seek treatment to prevent progression of the condition. Bacterial infections that cause chronic periodontitis also trigger inflammation in other areas of the body, and may result in complications in pregnancy. Managing chronic periodontitis before and during pregnancy may lower the risk of premature delivery and low infant birth weight.
