How does chronic periodontitis affect the body?

Chronic periodontitis almost always causes inflammation of the gums and formation of pockets between gums and teeth. The gums may recede, exposing more of each tooth, giving teeth an elongated appearance. As the condition worsens, it may cause progressive bone and tooth loss. Because of the presence of toxic bacteria in your mouth, you may have bad breath and experience an unpleasant taste.

The condition rarely causes pain. Yet, treatment is important to prevent continued destruction of the tissues and bones in the mouth and to prevent the body's autoimmune response from affecting other functions of the body.
