Does what I say about myself influence my body?
-
Pam Grout answered:Sure, you can quietly hope to lose weight. You can change your fate, wishing in tragic silence that you'd sure appreciate being a tad bit skinnier. This will let your body know that you are serious about being drop-dead gorgeous.
Whatever you do, refuse to put yourself down. Instead, become your own personal P.R. man. When you make comments like "I just look at a piece of apple pie and gain weight," your body listens and acts accordingly. Not only is your body recording every word, but your mental attitude becomes one of "I can't do it." You can do it. Say it now.
There's a saying in the twelve-step program: "Fake it till you make it." Pretend that you are somebody you are fond of and wish to encourage. I doubt that you would look at a close friend and, in her presence, roll your eyes and snicker at her weight. I think you might come up with something along the lines of "Good job. Good for you. You're really trying."
If you refuse to say negative things about yourself for an entire three weeks, it will no longer feel comfortable. You'll actually feel weird making comments about the size of your body. But by then, it will have started to change, to have become what you have encouraged it to be.
