Dr. Michael Roizen answered:Blood pressure tends to creep up around 65, but the American Heart Association's recommendation doesn't: Stay under 120/80. We're even more aggressive: We like BP to be as low as you can get it without tumbling over. Under 120/80 is good; 115/76 is optimal. People in that range have half as many heart attacks and strokes.
How? Eat well -- lots of fruits, veggies, and 100% whole grains, and next to no saturated/trans fats and added sugars/syrups. Walk 30 minutes a day, every day. Sleep eight hours a night, every night (not getting enough sleep can sharply increase blood pressure). Manage stress. If you need blood pressure meds, make sure to take them as if your life depends on it -- it does.Blood pressure tends to creep up around 65, but the American Heart Association's recommendation doesn't: Stay under 120/80. Dr. Kelly Traver answered:To lower your blood pressure (BP), lose excess weight, exercise, minimize your salt intake, and avoid excess alcohol consumption. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains also lowers blood pressure. This type of diet is called the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Take medication if needed. Don't neglect sleep, and avoid stress. Lack of sleep raises blood pressure, and so does stress. If you have high or borderline high blood pressure, buy a digital blood pressure cuff from a local pharmacy and get into the habit of checking your blood pressure regularly. Keep a log of your blood pressure.
