Chances are good that if a parent has a food or drug allergy that causes hives, the child will experience a similar reaction. Hives are a type of allergic response. Allergies present as hay fever (allergic rhinitis), asthma and allerigic skin eruptions (atopy). One of the type of allergic skin eruptions is hives. Allergic responses run in families although it could be different from person to person. For example, one sibling could have eczema, another could have asthma. The triggers could be different as well. One could react to antibiotics while another reacts to cat dander.
