How is Diovan used to treat heart failure?

Stacy Wiegman answered:Diovan is prescribed to patients with heart failure because it helps to stimulate the heart. Patients who are unable to take other medications called ACE inhibitors may be able to take Diovan for this condition. Diovan can control heart failure, but it does not cure it.

Dr. Imran Niazi of Aurora Health Care answered:Diovan (valsartan) belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers. These drugs prevent the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline, into the blood stream. They also lower blood pressure. Both actions reduce stress on the heart muscle and make it easier for the heart to work. A weakened heart is better able to pump under these conditions.
Other drugs in the same group include losartan (Cozaar) and irbesartan (Avapro). These drugs improve how heart failure patients feel. They also prolong the lives of heart failure patients. They are commonly used with beta blockers for heart failure.
