The types of ablation used to treat atrial fibrillation include pulmonary vein (PV) isolation and atrioventricular (AV) node. PV isolation electrically pinpoints areas in the pulmonary veins that trigger atrial fibrillations. During AV node ablation, a catheter is placed near the electrical connection between the atria and ventricles. Then, radiofrequency energy is used to destroy the AV node so electrical impulses are no longer sent to the ventricles. Other types of ablation may be available to treat your atrial fibrillation, so talk to your doctor about your treatment options.
