The best car seat for your child is one that will fit them for the stage of life they are in. If you choose to go with an infant carrier just know you may have to purchase a bigger car seat once they exceed the weight and height limit, which for some babies can be before they turn 1. Some of the more expensive car seats fit children from 5 lbs all the way to 100 lbs and can be converted into a booster seat.

Also be careful of buying second hand. Car seats have an expiration date on them which is usually about 4 years. The plastic can become brittle over time and be less safe in the event of a car accident. The manufacture date will be on a sticker on the bottom of the seat. If it is missing I would be hesitant to use this seat.

The best seat is simply the one that fits your child’s size, is correctly installed, and is used properly every time you drive. Don’t forget to have your car seat installation checked by a trained professional (many police or fire stations will inspect car seats).

If you haven’t already bought your infant car seat, you will need one to safely transport your newborn home from the hospital. The car seat must be rear-facing in the backseat at all times. If this is your first child (and the only car seat in your car), the rear center seat is recommended if possible. If you need to put 2 car seats in back, the most comfortable fit may be to have one on each side.

As your infant grows, he will outgrow the infant only car seat, which leaves many parents wondering what to buy next. Check the weight and height limit on your infant seat to know when he will need a new car seat. A convertible car seat is usually the next step. As the name implies, it can be used rear-facing now, then when he is older, it can be turned around to become a forward-facing car seat.

If possible, buy a new car seat. That way, you're sure that it's never been in a car crash. If you're using a used car seat, be certain it is not more than 6 years old, has never been in a crash and hasn't been recalled (check the Consumer Product Safety Commission for recalls).

Look for a model with a five-point harness (two shoulder straps, two leg straps and one crotch strap). It's the safest for baby. You can choose an infant-only seat, which is always used rear-facing. You can also choose a convertible seat. These start out rear-facing but can change to a front-facing seat when your baby gets bigger. Other tips:

    • Recline a rear-facing car safety seat at about 45 degrees or as directed by the instructions that came with the seat.
    • Get a free inspection to make sure the seat is installed right.
    • If you have a baby who is premature or has a low birthweight, look for a car safety seat with the shortest distance between the crotch strap and the seat back. Ideally, pick one with a crotch-to-seat back distance of 5 1/2 inches.
    • Pay close attention to the lower weight limit of the car seat. The typical car seat is only suited for newborns that weigh more than 5 pounds. Look for infant seats that can accommodate a baby who weighs 4 pounds or or less. Some manufactures sell inserts to attach to a regular infant car seat for preemies or low-birthweight babies.
