    Depakote ER is prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. It does not treat the symptoms of migraine headaches once they have started. How exactly Depakote ER works on migraine headaches is not known.

    Depakote ER is a medication used to prevent migraines. It is taken on a daily basis to prevent attacks but does not usually work to treat a headache that has already started. It belongs to a class of medication known as anticonvulsants because it is also used to prevent seizures in persons with epilepsy. It is not known how it prevents migraine headaches.
