Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:
By looking at you head-on, your dentist can assess your bite. An improper bite can make it hard to chew food and also may not look good. If your teeth are crowded, it can make you more likely to develop cavities or gum disease. Common bite problems that your dentist can see by looking at you include:
    • crossbite, cyour upper teeth don't match up with your lower teeth
    • crowding, in which your permanent teeth don't have enough room in your jaw
    • overbite, in which your upper front teeth jut out too far over your lower teeth
    • underbite, in which your lower front teeth are in front of your upper front teeth.

By looking at you head-on, your dentist will evaluate your interpupillary line to your occlusal plane. To translate, this is the horizontal line that runs across the pupils of the eyes. It checks how your eyes line up to the corners of your mouth when you make a full smile.
