What dental problems are common in the elderly with diabetes?

Elderly people with diabetes are at increased risk of problems such as infections and complications associated with procedures, such as oral surgery, extractions, implants, root canals, crowns, and other restorative procedures. They are also at higher risk for dry mouth, bad breath, thrush, gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.

With increasing age teeth become worn and the roots of teeth may have become exposed resulting in sensitivity to cold or hot foods. However,  elderly people with diabetes can keep their oral health complications to a minimum by controlling their blood glucose levels and adhering to their medications. Regular visits to the dentist and physician are advised.

Today the elderly can expect to have a lifetime of good oral health if they maintain good oral health habits ie twice daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing and regular visits to the dentist. Other important ingredients are a balanced diet, regular exercise, and good hygiene.
