Dental implants are successful about 95% of the time, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. A dental implant consists of a titanium peg that is fused into the jawbone and an artificial tooth that rests above the gum line. Dental implants are an increasingly popular long-term alternative to dental bridges and dentures for adults who have lost teeth.

Dental implants can be very successful but their success depends on several factors.

The first variable is the patient. Is the patient healthy, does she smoke, are there any medical concerns, and is there enough jaw bone to support an implant.

The second variable is the skill and experience of the dentist placing the implant. Placing implants is a surgical procedure and you want to be sure the dentist has the requisite surgical experience. You want to go to a dentist who places at least fifty implants per year and has lots of experience both in placing implants and in treating complications.
