Proper oral hygiene is important for people with diabetes because the disease puts you at greater risk of developing certain oral health problems. The most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are gum disease, certain fungal infections and delayed healing, which can also lead to infection. Regular dental checkups and periodontal screenings and good oral hygiene habits are important parts of keeping your mouth healthy. Your dentist may recommend more frequent evaluations and preventive procedures, such as teeth cleaning, to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

When people have diabetes they are much more susceptible to periodontal or gum disease. Even the smallest amount of plaque left below the gum line or between teeth can cause bleeding and inflammation - more so than in a person without diabetes. Because of this is it really important to brush thoroughly (about 2 minutes) twice daily and use a product to clean between teeth. One excellent home care choice for people with diabetes is a Water Flosser also called an oral irrigator or dental water jet. It has been tested on people with diabetes and found to reduce bleeding (44%) and gingivitis (41%) better than brushing alone.

If you have diabetes, and are sloppy about brushing your teeth you can get a gum infection called periodontal disease (first warning sign: small amounts of blood when you brush). This low-grade infection will make it nearly impossible to control your blood sugar. And if your blood sugar is all over the place it makes it nearly impossible to beat down the infection.
