What is dental erosion?

American Dental Association answered:Dental erosion (sometimes called tooth erosion) is a condition that occurs when acids eat away at a tooth’s surface. It can be prevented by avoiding foods with added sugars. Drinking lots of water and brushing your teeth (Two times a day for two minutes) and flossing can help prevent erosion as well.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:Dental erosion is a process in which acids damage the protective layer of enamel on your teeth. Acids responsible for this process are found in foods and drinks, such soft drinks, juices, and citrus fruits. Stomach acids can cause erosion as well, putting those who suffer from bulimia and acid reflux at risk. As the enamel on your teeth is eroded, you may begin to experience tooth sensitivity. Hot and cold foods may cause a twinge of pain in your teeth. As your enamel becomes thinner through erosion your teeth may become yellow and discolored. If erosion proceeds further to expose the layer of dentin beneath your enamel, you may even need your tooth restored to fix the damage.Dental erosion is a process in which acids damage the protective layer of enamel on your teeth.
