Degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis are the same thing. They are simply alternate names, or synonyms, for each other. Other names include hypertrophic osteoarthritis (hypertrophic means overgrowth), or simply arthritis, but this is more broad.Degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis are the same thing. Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Osteoarthritis is considered a form of degenerative joint disease because it occurs when the cartilage that normally surrounds and protects the joints wears away. When the cartilage is worn away, bones rub against one another, causing pain and disability.
Pain and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms. The pain may be worse after exercise, or when placing weight or pressure on the joint.
Eventually, this form of degenerative joint disease causes the joints to become stiff and harder to move. The joints may make rubbing, grating or crackling sounds when moved. Medication and physical therapy may help ease the pain. Sometimes the joints have to be replaced through surgery.
