Some degenerative developmental disabilities may run in families. Since some of these conditions are caused by genetic mutations, they may be found among people in the same family. If someone in your family is diagnosed with a degenerative developmental disability caused by a genetic defect, genetic testing may be able to determine if you also carry that gene.
