Does deep vein thrombosis (DVT) run in families?
-
Abnormal blood clotting (hypercoagulable state), is usually a result of inherited genes from one or both parents. To protect your children from DVT, make sure that they are active, both to prevent blood clots from forming and to avoid obesity, another risk factor for DVT. If your child has a blood-clotting disorder, consult your doctor and ensure that you child receives the proper dosage and frequency of anticoagulant medications, if prescribed. Take care in preparing meals, as anyone on anticoagulants must limit intake of vitamin K, found in soybean and canola oil, as well as green, leafy vegetables.
