If you have group B streptococcus (GBS) during your pregnancy, there's a chance that you could pass the bacteria on to your baby. In women, GBS bacteria live in the rectum and vagina, so a baby can become infected during childbirth. Infection with GBS can cause serious, even life-threatening, problems in a newborn. These include lung infections, blood infections, and meningitis (inflammation of the tissues around the brain and spinal cord).
