If you’re concerned about bad breath, see your dentist. Bad breath can be caused by a number of sources, and he or she can help identify the cause and determine the best treatment.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, eliminating gum disease and scheduling regular professional cleanings are essential to reducing bad breath. Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily with floss. Brush your tongue, too. If you wear dentures, be sure to remove them at night and clean them thoroughly before replacing them the next morning.

It’s important to note that mouthwash will only mask the odor temporarily. Mouthwashes are generally cosmetic and do not have a long-lasting effect on bad breath. If you must constantly use a breath freshener to hide unpleasant mouth odor, see your dentist.

Many over-the-counter products claim to cure bad breath (halitosis). Some of these products only mask the problem with other scents, such as peppermint. Removing / reducing the bacteria that causes bad breath can cure the odor; however it is not a permanent cure, as conditions in the mouth and nose change frequently.

While there is no cure for bad breath, just like there is no cure for body odor, it generally can be easily managed on a daily basis. Good oral hygiene is the first line of defense against bad breath. Brushing the teeth and tongue twice daily and along with flossing is very important. Along those lines, schedule regular visits with your dentist for professional cleanings. If you wear dentures remove them at night for cleaning. Beyond that, mouthwashes can offer temporary relief. Be careful of foods or tobacco products that can contribute to bad breath.
