    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Topamax (also known as topiramate) can cause a number of side effects, including weight loss and a change in one's ability to taste food. This medicine can also cause mood and behavior changes, including depression. Your mother should talk to her doctor concerning any side effects she is having. She should also talk with her doctor about increasing the amount of food she eats while she is taking Topamax.

Topamax (topiramate) has the side effect of weight loss in many people. This weight loss has been shown to range from 6-8% of total body weight. It has been studied at least 3 times in limited studies as a weight loss drug. At this time, however, there is no FDA indication for using Topamax as a weight loss drug.
