Nurse practitioners treat a variety of conditions, depending on their specialty. Nurse practitioners can diagnose and prescribe medications for mild conditions, such as an ear infection, to complex conditions, such as kidney failure. State boards of nursing regulate a nurse practitioner’s scope of practice and prescribing ability. Some states are more restrictive with the nurse practitioner’s prescriptive authority and autonomy than other states. Nurse practitioners have an advanced Masters or Doctorate degree and are nationally certified in a specific area, such as Family Nurse Practitioner, board certified (FNP-BC). SCAI answered:
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses (RNs) who have completed advanced education (in most states, a master's degree) and training in diagnosing and managing common health concerns, including chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Nurse practitioners collaborate with physicians and other health professionals. Nurse practitioners can refer patients to specialists for further care as needed.

Nurse Practitioners treat, diagnosis, educate, and can prescribe medications for many disease processes and conditions. Depending on their specialty, they can treat according to their scope of practice. For example if they are specialized in Woman's Health, they can do annual exams, pap smears, treat vaginal infections, menopause, prenatal and post-partum diagnoses.

A Nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who is prepared, through advanced education and clinical training, to provide a wide range of preventive and acute health care services to individuals of all ages. NPs take health histories and provide complete physical examinations; diagnose and treat many common acute and chronic problems; interpret laboratory results and X-rays; prescribe and manage medications and other therapies; provide health teaching and supportive counseling with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and refer patients to other health professionals as needed. In many states the NP has prescriptive authority, meaning they can write prescriptions of certain categories of medications.

As a Nurse Practitioner I treat many medical conditions. I treat patients with diabetes type two (insulin and non-insulin dependent), Hypertension, Coronary artery disease, thyroid disease, Congestive heart failure, Afib, Dermatology issue, rashes, wounds, burns, fractures, infections, GERD, Reflux, ENT issues, Neuro issues and colds (viruses). As a Nurse Practitioner it all depends upon where you are practicing. Some Np's in certain specialty areas may only see certain types of patients, other NP's working in Internal med or Emergency Room see a more broad range of patients. I am a nurse practitioner practicing in Internal medicine and Emergency Room Medicine.
