Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. Because the body does not make insulin with type 1 diabetes, you must take insulin daily via injections, pills or other delivery system. Type 1 diabetes is managed with a healthy diet, regular exercise, staying at a normal weight, and avoiding cigarette smoking.  While dental problems are common with type 1 diabetes, other complications may include heart disease, kidney disease, eye problems, foot and skin infections and more. Prevention is key with type 1 diabetes. You can prevent problems, including tooth decay and gum disease, by staying in touch with your dentist and being away of warning signs. Seeking treatment for tooth decay and gum disease is important to avoid invasive procedures.
