    Dr. Mark Morocco answered:

The symptoms of childhood schizophrenia are similar to those of adults with schizophrenia. Common symptoms of childhood schizophrenia include:

    • Psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions
    • Having trouble speaking with others, such as frequently switching topics, or talking in strange   ways
    • Displaying odd behaviors, or extremely subdued behavior
    • Appearing to lack a normal range of emotions
    • Losing interest in daily activities
    • Isolating themselves from their friends and family
    • Lack of self-care, such as refusing to get dressed, bathe, or eat

In order to be diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia, a child's symptoms must persist for at least six months. The symptoms must also cause a great deal of trouble for the child, such as interfering with schoolwork, friendships, family relations, or other areas in her life.
