    In the general population, depression is very common. Up to 25% of women and 15% of men may have experienced an episode of depression during their lifetimes. During the period from 2002 to 2007, veterans entering the VA health system were diagnosed with depression at a rate of 14%. Among service members diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression is reported at about 45%.
