Cognitive behavioral therapy may be helpful for some children with schizophrenia. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that has been shown to help children with symptoms of depression and anxiety. In the United Kingdom, CBT has also been shown to be helpful in treating adults with schizophrenia. Further research may need to be done to determine how effective CBT is in treating young people with schizophrenia. When a child participates in CBT, a therapist encourages the child to identify problems in his life that he wants to change. Through homework assignments and interventions done in the therapy session, a child can learn to change unhealthy thoughts and behaviors associated with schizophrenia symptoms.
